Kenyan Company That's Conquering Africa, One Incinerator at a Time
Kenya’s industrial sector is undergoing a remarkable transformation, with local manufacturers stepping up to produce world-class equipment that rivals anything from Europe, India or China. A recent visit by the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA) Trade Advisory Manager Charles Tumbo, Product Market Development Managers David Yamina and Rebecca Mpaayei, Principal Officer Samuel Mwathi from Product Market Development, Jonah Karanja and Albert Omanga from Nation Brand and Marketing to Plenser Limited highlights this shift, showcasing how homegrown engineering excellence is making waves in regional and international markets.
A Visit That Validates Excellence
On Wednesday, 28th September 2022, KEPROBA officials visited our manufacturing facility at Saku Business Park, North Airport Road, in Embakasi, Nairobi. The visit was part of KEPROBA’s mandate to assess export readiness and support Kenyan enterprises in penetrating new markets.
Plenser Limited was established in 1997 as a partnership before incorporating as a private limited company in 2001, initially focusing on manufacturing industrial boilers. In 2019, the company expanded its portfolio to include incinerator manufacturing, a strategic move that would prove crucial for the region’s waste management needs.
The 60% Advantage
During the visit, Plenser Limited GCEO Moses Kamau shared a compelling insight: the company uses locally sourced materials, reducing production costs by nearly 60%. This significant cost advantage allows Plenser to offer competitively priced, high-quality incinerators without compromising on performance or durability.
The GCEO emphasized that these locally-manufactured incinerators are of higher quality than imported alternatives from India, China and Europe. This assertion is backed by the company’s rigorous adherence to international engineering standards and certification by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to manufacture boilers and incinerators.
Exporting Kenyan Quality Across Africa
With a production capacity of 10 high-quality incinerators monthly, Plenser is servicing both the local and regional markets in East Africa. As of 2022, Plenser Limited had successfully exported incinerators to Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia.
The company’s export journey began even earlier, with its first international installation at Geita Gold Mines in Tanzania in 2013. This early success opened doors to larger contracts, including the installation of 18 incinerators in Ethiopia and 2 in Somalia in 2018.
In a landmark achievement, Plenser launched its own Pyroflame® brand of incinerators in 2020, designed and manufactured at their Nairobi workshop with equal finesse to globally recognized brands. Both the Pyroflame® and Surefire brands for which Plenser is the African agent are approved by NEMA and meet stringent environmental compliance requirements.
KEPROBA’s Role in Export Growth
The KEPROBA team was comprised of Trade Advisory Manager Charles Tumbo, Product Market Development Managers David Yamina and Rebecca Mpaayei and other officials from the Nation Brand and Marketing division. Their visit aimed to understand Plenser’s operations and identify opportunities for collaboration to enhance export capacity.
Through partnerships with KEPROBA, Plenser aims to penetrate the broader African market and eventually the global market. The company’s boilers and incinerators are competitive and meet required international standards, positioning them favourably for export growth.
CEO Moses Kamau expressed gratitude for KEPROBA’s role in developing upcoming enterprises, citing Plenser as a beneficiary of the agency’s support and guidance.
The Bigger Picture: Kenya’s Industrial Renaissance
Plenser’s success story reflects broader trends in Kenya’s manufacturing sector. The company’s collaboration with KEPROBA aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Big 4 Agenda, which prioritize manufacturing, export growth and job creation.
The visit and subsequent partnership underscore the importance of agencies like KEPROBA in facilitating market access, providing market intelligence and branding Kenyan products for the international market. The agency’s strategic objectives include developing market-specific policies organizing trade promotion activities and supporting negotiations for market access under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Looking Ahead
With over 29 years of engineering experience and a track record of delivering turnkey solutions across East Africa, Plenser is well-positioned for continued growth. The company’s commitment to local manufacturing, quality and innovation ensures it can compete effectively in regional and global markets.
As Kenya continues its journey toward industrial self-reliance, companies like Plenser demonstrate that with the right support, local manufacturers can produce world-class equipment that meets international standards while creating jobs and driving economic growth.
